Can a superhero movie with no plans for a sequel or future have an end credits scene?
If we take The Flash as an example, yes! The film with Ezra Miller as the super fast hero has an end credits scene at the very end.
While the film ends with Barry saving the world from himself, protecting the multiverse (including a weird, CGI-driven Christopher Reeve), and returning to his normal timeline, Flash’s future seems entirely dependent on how much this film brings in . Warner Bros. did not announce any upcoming Flash projects in its initial list of television and film projects. That could change, however, as timelines for items that are very successful may shift.
However, the end credits of superhero movies mostly act as mini-commercials for upcoming movies. So if there’s no project in the pipeline, what will an extra scene do for this hero?
The answer seems to lie in finding what’s left: Aquaman!
In the end credits scene, Barry Allen and Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) hang out together. Barry tells a visibly drunk Arthur about his adventures, saying that throughout the multiverse, Arthur is always Aquaman. It’s strange, as Barry explains, because he’s met different Bruces, Wayne and others, but Arthur is always the same. Then Arthur gets a little too drunk and falls face first into a puddle (disgusting). Barry asks if Arthur needs anything, to which Arthur replies he’d like another drink before taking a little nap in the puddle (yes, still gross).
This scene acts more like a teaser with a little inside joke.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which stars Momoa, is slated to hit theaters on December 20th. The bringing together of Flash and Aquaman and the establishment of their relationship suggests the possibility of a Flash cameo in this film. After all, the two haven’t been canonically seen together since 2017’s Justice League. Their chemistry was arguably one of the better parts of a mediocre film.
The other reason this scene seems so significant is that the envisioned Warner Bros. universe of DC superheroes now seems all but scrapped. Warner Bros. named Peter Safran and director James Gunn as the studio’s new creative heads for the DC Comics universe, and with that decision, it appears that Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, and Ben Affleck have all been released from their contracts, and may not be again do (side appearances) reprise their roles as Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman. Momoa and Miller are the last two big stars still playing their Justice League characters. It’s not clear if there’s a future at Warner Bros. for either of them. new superhero universe. Safran and Gunn have hinted that there could be a possible Aquaman trilogy, but rumor has it that Momoa is being considered for the role of a DC anti-hero named Lobo.
The joke about Arthur being the same character throughout the multiverse – no matter what happens next – seems like a cute tribute to how Momoa brought Aquaman to life.
