Quito.- The definitive candidacies for the parliamentary elections will be announced to Ecuadorians on August 6, two weeks before the elections, according to today’s electoral calendar.
Although the candidate lists for the presidency, vice-presidency and the National Assembly (Parliament) have already been registered, the validation and appeal processes of the registered names are ongoing.
At this stage, citizens or political movements can object to any candidacy if they believe it violates a rule.
The Revolución Ciudadana movement, for example, questioned the candidacy of Patricio Carrillo, the former interior minister who was sacked in September 2022 for the femicide of lawyer María Belén Bernal and censored in the legislature with a ban on holding public office.
These types of claims have a legal process of notification, appeal and analysis within the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Electoral Dispute Tribunal.
It is expected that on August 6th the procedures will be completed and the final list of registered candidatures will be presented and any appeals will be resolved.
The election campaign will start on August 8th and end on the 17th of this month, while the presidential debate will take place on the 13th.
After President Guillermo Lasso ordered the death cross on May 17, Ecuador introduced universal suffrage and more than 13 million citizens are called to vote on August 20.
A possible vote is scheduled for October 15 and the announcement of the new president is due in November.
Seven men and one woman are seeking to succeed Lasso, and more than a thousand candidates are seeking a seat in parliament but would only be in power until 2025.
