Domaine Le Pic-Bois: to observe the black bear

At Domaine Le Pic-Bois in Saint-Aimé-des-Lacs, about two hours from Quebec City, a guide will tell you about black bear habitat and lifestyle.

Then you can observe and photograph them from the top of a watchtower, safe and protected from inclement weather, less than 20 meters away.

The excursion lasts about three hours while the walk to the Mirador takes about fifteen minutes. On the way we will discover the fauna and flora of the forest of the estate.

Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Reserve: a paradise for birds

About fifty kilometers from Quebec, near Saint-Joachim, the Cap-Tourmente National Wildlife Area is home to more than 180 species of birds and 30 species of mammals, some of which are endangered, such as the peregrine falcon and the bobolink meadows. There are also more than 20 species of ducks and geese, about ten species of birds of prey and 30 species of warblers.

Wood ducks, marsh harriers, helmeted woodpeckers, neck grouse, scarlet piranga, indigo bunting, redstarts and snow geese live there. Blackbirds, marsh sparrows and black ducks also live in the coastal swamp.

Réserve faunique des Laurentides: local species

Between the Quebec and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean regions, the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve offers 7861 km2 of omnipresent wildlife. Among other things, there is a safe observation site where an experienced guide and interpreter demystifies the black bear.

Species to watch include the caribou, which was reintroduced in the 1960s and 1970s after the original herd was destroyed. You can also see beavers, snowshoe hares, wolves, lynx, martens, moose, fishermen, porcupines and foxes.

A variety of birds nest or live near bodies of water, including grouse, egrets, loons and spruce grouse.

Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier: hiking with animals

Known for its hiking trails, the Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier is also a place where moose are very present. Several beaver families also live along the Scotora Trail. Less than 30 minutes from Old Quebec, north of Lake Saint-Charles, 194 species of birds can be observed there: gray heron, bittern, night heron, osprey, gold-eyed barrow grouse, moorhen, purple finch, etc. Excluding tits, nuthatches, blue jays and mallards to forget. You can also observe mink, otters, beavers, rabbits and deer along eight kilometers of hiking trails, as well as 30 species of mammals and 10 species of reptiles.
