Quincy Jones, Jr. was born in south Chicago in 1934 and began making music at a young age.

His parents later divorced after his mother was institutionalized with a mental illness, and he moved to Washington state with his father and stepmother in 1943, eventually settling in Seattle.

Born a musician, he began playing the trumpet and arranging music in high school.

After receiving scholarships to Seattle University and later Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, he dropped out to take classes with bandleader Lionel Hampton along the way, where he continued to arrange music.

He later moved to New York where he worked with music greats Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and others.

This work got him a job at Mercury Records, where he was promoted to vice president in 1961, becoming the first African American to hold the position.

In 1980 he founded his own label Qwest Records as a joint venture with Warner Bros Records.

The tireless musician has worked in film since 1965 and has several film projects in the works, including the new musical The Color Purple, starring The Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P Henson. The film is scheduled to open on Christmas Day.
