A woman in Ecuador who was previously discovered alive in her own coffin has actually died.
According to Gilbert Barberán, the woman’s son, Bella Montoya, 76, died Friday afternoon after spending a week in intensive care in the coastal town of Babahoyo.
Montoya was quickly transported to Martin Icaza General Hospital when she was found alive after banging on her own coffin at the funeral service in Babahoyo.
“During her hospital stay, she received comprehensive medical care and regular check-ups by hospital specialists. Likewise, the relevant medical audit was carried out for this case,” the Ecuadorian Health Ministry said in a statement.
Montoya was initially hospitalized for a stroke and was previously reported dead.
Barberán told CNN that he had To his mother’s death a second time.
Montoya’s daughter, Zeneida Leal, said her mother’s condition had deteriorated.
“The doctor said that my mother was sick, she was very sensitive, she had kidney failure and she couldn’t be saved because everything was getting complicated and she was going into respiratory arrest,” Leal told CNN.
The Department of Health said an investigation into the events leading up to her alleged death was underway.
