Quebecers who were due to return from a trip to Cayo Santa Maria on Saturday night are furious at the treatment by the airline Sunwing.
A breakup would have grounded the plane of Sunwing Flight 307 bound for Montreal from the airport in Santa Clara, Cuba. After hours of waiting, the passengers were taken to a hotel 30 minutes from the airport.
“We received a text message telling us that our flight was finally to be rescheduled to 9 a.m. the next morning,” Ludovivc Murat told the QMI agency. They tried to put us in a hotel but we took photos to show the horror. You can not imagine. There were tarantulas. We even asked the guards if it was safe and we were told, shaking our heads, no.
In photos and videos, insects can be seen on the floor and on one bed, bats can be seen on another at the entrance to the hotel.
“Sunwing left us in the shit,” added the Montreal native. It’s not even a real hotel. It wasn’t even open to tourists.
There is a lack of rooms for all travelers, he said.
“I’m not here to exaggerate, I have no time to waste,” said Ludovivc Murat. We were sent to a hotel that had no rooms. I have not slept. There was no water. There were children who cried, that doesn’t happen.
“Everyone is disgusted”
For her part, Julie Beaudet of Otterburn Park in Montérégie noted the unsanitary conditions.
“They sent us to different hotels,” explained the one who was traveling with her parents and two children. We were the last group. We were sent out because the airport was closed. They weren’t even sure they had a place for everyone. […]. Arriving at the hotel, the first group wanted to go back to the airport ahead of us because it was unhygienic there. They said there were spiders, snakes and lizards. I photographed a tarantula and bats.”
A Laval resident did not hide her anger.
“Everyone is disgusted,” said Louciné Solakian, there are even people who have decided to buy another flight to leave with another airline.”
On Sunday afternoon, the passengers finally left Cuba for Montreal.
A Sunwing customer service representative said Sunday that no one was available to answer questions from the media.
