A submarine that tourist groups were supposed to use to visit the wreck of the Titanic lost its tracks in the Atlantic off the coast of the American continent during these hours. The BBC reports on this and states that the alarm was raised and the search launched. Up to 5 guests would be on board the submarine, the Boston Coast Guard confirms, quoted by various American media and then also picked up by the Guardian and other British newspapers. The Independent Online adds that the boat is managed by tour operator OceanGate Expeditions, which offers 8-day dives priced at $250,000 per person.
The small submarine is part of a flotilla of underwater vehicles used by private companies to take small groups of tourists to the depths of the ocean to visit the seabed where the remains of the famous ocean liner lie 3800 meters below sea level. The Titanic was launched over a century ago with a reputation as an “unsinkable” ship, but sank in 1912 with many of her passengers after striking an iceberg on the first crossing between England and America, in a maritime disaster that ended in the United States Annals remained until it was told in books and films.
