Titanic: Tourist submarine sets out to explore mythical wreck that can’t be found, five people missing

A submarine used by researchers, but also to visit the wreck of the Titanic with tourists, has disappeared in the Atlantic. A search and rescue mission was launched.

It was the Boston Coast Guard that sounded the alert on Monday, June 19. The BBC has been told a rescue operation has been launched to find a dive boat that has gone missing in the Atlantic.

A Coast Guard spokesman confirmed to the Guardian that “a small submarine with five people on board has disappeared near the wreck of the Titanic”.

This submarine is designed to bring teams of scientists close to the famous wreck of the Titanic for research work. In recent years, tourists have been able to accompany these teams with a relatively high financial stake (several tens of thousands of dollars, according to Le Parisien $125,000).

Scientific and tourist trips

Since its discovery in 1985, the Titanic has been widely visited, particularly for research into its tragic history.

Known for its length for its time, this mythical liner struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage before sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic.

More than 1,500 of the 2,200 passengers died in the sinking. The wreck is currently about 600 kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland in Canada and is 3,800 meters deep.
