A submarine used to bring tourists to visit the wreck of the Titanic that disappeared in the Atlantic.
The Boston Coast Guard confirmed to the BBC that search and rescue operations were underway and stated that there were five people on board – three passengers (billionaire Hamish Harding, OcenaGate Expeditions CEO and explorer Paul Henrit Nargeolet), the pilot and an assistant.
OceanGate Expeditions, the private company that organized the tour, said it was working hard to get the group safely back aboard the submarine. All our thoughts are with those aboard the sub and their families
Passengers spend $250,000 to take part in the 8-day expeditions.
Included is an underwater exploration of the wreck aboard the carbon fiber submarine.
The famous wreck lies 3,800 meters deep at the bottom of the Atlantic, about 600 kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The passenger liner collided with an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912. Of the 2,200 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 perished.
Visits to the seabed have been frequent since 1985, the year the wreck was discovered.
A month ago, Atlantic Production and Magellan released new 3D scans of the wreck.
