Elon Musk fears AI development without regulation: “I think we should stop” – TESLARATI

In his speech at the VivaTech conference in Paris on Friday, Elon Musk again called for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence and warned of the dangers of AI if it is not regulated.

Musk has been a proponent of more refined regulation of AI development for several years. Since 2017, he has urged that there be guidelines for further development, as over-development before regulations are laid down could be detrimental to humanity.

“I’ve been exposed to cutting-edge AI, and I think people should really be concerned about that,” Musk said at the National Governors Association meeting in 2017. “I keep ringing the alarm bell, but until people see robots go down.” The road is killing people, they don’t know how to react because it seems so ethereal.”

Tesla began developing its own bot, which Musk unveiled last year and claimed could simplify human life by completing monotonous and boring tasks.

However, he remains convinced that AI development should slow down long before a proper regulatory process is in place. The White House released its own draft AI Bill of Rights in late 2022: A Vision to Protect Our Civil Rights in the Age of Algorithms, which outlined five key principles for keeping people safe during AI development.

Musk continued this narrative in his speech last week, explaining that there are potential dangers to humans if AI development proceeds without regulations.

“There is a real danger that digital superintelligence will have negative consequences,” Musk said (via Portal). “So if we’re not careful when creating artificial general intelligence, we could potentially have a catastrophic outcome.”

“I’m in favor of AI regulation because I think it poses a risk to the public. And for anything that poses a risk to the public, there has to be some sort of arbiter, and that arbiter is the regulator.”

Musk’s first appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast a few years ago prompted a similar conversation, in which he discussed his fears of AI over-engineering.

On Friday, he said he believes AI development should be on pause until there is regulation.

“I just want to say, I think we should stop.”
