Civil House minister Rui Costa explained that the government’s direction towards Petrobras (BVMF:) had changed to avoid resources being distributed “like they were Santa Claus”. Now it is time to reinvest, said the minister.

“No private company in the world, in any industry, pays out so many dividends. With companies, in general, a large part of the result is reinvested, so that the company remains a reference in the sector in which it operates,” he explained at a lunch organized by the Parliamentary Front of Entrepreneurship (FPE). “The dividend payment method is a disservice to Petrobras and the nation.”

And the minister said: “The direction has changed. Petrobras will invest to create jobs, strengthen itself and continue to be an energy company.”

The Civil House minister also defended changes in the charging system for energy distribution in the country. According to President Lula’s assistant, the growth of the free energy market has meant that poor people who don’t have solar panels at home, for example, have to bear the cost of spreading their energy bills.

“There is an imbalance in energy tariffs in the country,” the minister noted.

According to him, users of the regulated energy system pay seven times more for electricity than users on the free market.

Rui Costa assured that the government is only considering using it to subsidize production in the country and not electricity generation. “Natural gas is important for the energy supply in times of acute crises,” he reflected. For the minister, the ideal would be to use natural gas to produce fertilizers for the agricultural industry. The supply of these raw materials has been affected by the war between Ukraine and Russia, a major fertilizer producer.

“Energetic transition is not teleportation,” Rui Costa said.

The minister explained that the government cannot do without resources of the current energy model during this period of transition.
