Ten days after announcing the start of the counteroffensive, the Ukrainian army is claiming its gains and suffering reprisals from Russia. In Zaporijjia, which was bombed on the night of Monday 19 June to Tuesday 20 June, the water is starting to run out. This is a consequence of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station.

The local reservoirs are dry. The huge expanse of water several square kilometers and several meters deep Now it looks like some kind of desert Sand littered with fish remains and small puddles. For the inhabitants of this agricultural zone, water is vital.

Many local residents are self-sufficient thanks to their culture. “We irrigated our vegetable garden with water from the reservoir. Today there is nothing left: our flowers, our vegetables, we risk losing everything,” admits a woman. This tank must also be used for cooling the Zaporijjia nuclear power plant a few kilometers away.

Since the dam’s destruction, concern around the reservoir has increased regarding a possible nuclear accident. The mayor of the village of Balabyne, which borders the reservoir, receives concerned residents every day. “Some of my residents have talked about leaving town. This desert expanse is scary, as is the nuclear risk.”says the mayor.
