CHICAGO (WLS) — A 20-year-old man charged with hit-and-run outside guaranteed rate field before a White Sox game Tuesday night is due to appear in Bond Court Thursday.
Condelarious Garcia was charged with four counts of serious reckless driving and one count of driving with a suspended license, among several other charges.
The crash happened just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday just outside Guaranteed Rate Field, about a half-hour before the start of the Sox game.
Charles Janczy was one of the Sox fans who entered the stadium. He was hit along with three other pedestrians and seriously injured.
Janczy ended up in the car’s sunroof as it sped onto the Dan Ryan Expressway, where it was eventually pulled over by state troopers.
Janczy’s son Jerome said his father was in the hospital with broken bones all over his body.
“He says he didn’t even see the car coming and then it drove off,” said Jerome Janczy. “Before he knew it, he was thrown face down into the perpetrator’s vehicle. And within minutes he found himself in a chase with the Dan Ryan. I mean, it sounds like a movie, but it was real.”
Eleventh Circuit Councilwoman Nicole Lee said she was told surveillance video of the White Sox showed the driver speeding through a crowd of fans and hopping onto the curb to avoid three vehicles.
She said she plans to work with the city to make the area near 35th Street and Shields Avenue safer.
