Fraley secures the HR tiebreak in eighth as Cincinnati closes a 3-0 deficit to defeat Colorado

June 21, 2023

Mark Sheldon

CINCINNATI — Reds freshman starting pitcher Andrew Abbott’s scoreless streak early in his big-league career ended a batter in Wednesday’s game against the Rockies with a home run. Then two more home runs hit to widen the gap.

Giving up runs was new for Abbott, but is Cincinnati coming back? Seems like just another tag ending in ‘Y’ for this club. The Reds hit five unanswered runs and fought off a 5-3 win over the Rockies at Great American Ball Park, extending their winning streak to 11 games.

“When you have nine guys and whoever’s on the mound keeps going through the right processes, you develop those habits,” said catcher Luke Maile, who hit a two-run single during a three-run end of the fifth inning . “We have a lot of really good habits at the moment. If you want to call that swing, great. You have to earn it first.”

It was Jake Fraley’s crucial two-run home run against Daniel Bard at the bottom of the eighth inning that sealed the game. Cincinnati has had 26 wins from behind in 2023, the most in the major leagues.

“It’s a game full of possibilities, as everyone knows. We pretty much took all the chances we had during that period,” said Abbott, who hit ten batters in six innings while earning three runs and conceding four hits for a non-decision.

How did the Reds keep their momentum? A relentless offense has been a big reason, with 68 runs in their last 11 games for an average of 6.18 runs per game.

Although the rotation has struggled throughout the season, the bullpen has routinely taken over the starters. The pitching team has a 3.65 ERA during the streak.

All in all, Cincinnati has the longest winning streak since 1957, when the club won 12 straight games.

“It’s impressive,” said manager David Bell. “It’s kind of a reminder that this kind of streak isn’t easy. It’s a struggle every day. It’s a huge challenge. You need everything you have.”

One Team ’57 All-Star outfielder was Gus Bell, David’s grandfather.

“I’ve heard so much about these teams,” Bell said. “So it’s pretty nice to be mentioned and compared to teams like that, even in a small way.”

Abbott started on a scoreless streak of 17 2/3 innings and became the first major league pitcher since Mound switched to current distance in 1893 to begin his career with three consecutive scoreless starts of at least five innings.

That streak ended two pitches into the game when Brenton Doyle hit a 0-1 curveball into right field, setting a home run lead.

“I tried to imagine what it would be like when he finally did it [allow a run] and if I had a message for him. I took one look at his face and he simply asked for a new ball. “He was fine,” Maile said.

But Elehuri’s Montero also hit a 0-1 curveball into left field for a one-off home run in the second inning. Randal Grichuk’s one-off home run in the fourth inning gave Colorado a 3-0 lead.

“It’s going to happen, and I think the most important thing for me is how do I react when it happens?” Abbott said.

After Grichuk, Abbott retired his last eight batters. Overall, he hit three batters over the minimum – all from home runs.

With bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning, Maile hit two runs with his single through the middle. TJ Friedl’s RBI single to center field provided the deciding run. At the end of the eighth game, Elly De La Cruz hit a double into left field, setting up Fraley in front of 23,637 fans.

“It’s huge for us. This series was a lot of fun to see how all the fans were out there and how excited they were. “When we see them emerge, we feed on them,” Fraley said.

During the series, the Reds have won or streaked the Cardinals, Royals, Astros, and Rockies. From this group only the Astros participate. The next series will be the biggest test yet. On Friday they meet the Braves, who have the best record in the Netherlands.

According to Fraley, there is no difference in approach between opponents and there is no pressure in the clubhouse to keep the series alive.

“It was easy for us,” he said. “Who are we going to face next? And what do we have to do to put ourselves in the best position to win? We’ve done a phenomenal job on it. We reap the rewards.”
