After the storms, rail traffic in the south of Baden-Württemberg was severely impaired, and on this Thursday evening between Basel and Freiburg im Breisgau it even came to a complete standstill. Trees fell on the tracks and the wind caused damage to electrical installations. In addition, several roads are impassable in the Lörrach area. The Freiburg im Breisgau fire brigade is also on duty because of falling trees in the city.
A phenomenon called “Storm Lambert”
Baden-Württemberg was on Thursday evening in the highest storm alarm. The weather services expected extremely violent phenomena. Authorities have urged residents to avoid driving, protect their vehicles and secure anything that might fly away. Public events such as concerts or markets have been cancelled. In some cities, firefighters have positioned vehicles in strategic locations. Deutsche Bahn expected massive disruptions and recommended travelers to postpone their journey. The validity of tickets purchased for this Thursday has been extended by two days.
This phenomenon was christened “Storm Lambert” by the German Weather Service. The storm has already caused major damage in Rhineland-Palatinate.
