Stephen King once wrote: “Nightmares exist outside of logic, and explanations bring little joy; they stand in contrast to the poetry of fear. »

In a horror story, the victim keeps asking, “Why?” But there can’t be, and shouldn’t be, an explanation. The unanswered mystery is what sticks in our minds the longest and is what we will remember in the end. My name is Alan Wake, I’m a writer. »

It’s the first thing Alan Wake says in his 2010 title game, but using a quote from a famous author like Stephen King isn’t always easy. Or cheap. Luckily that is king of horror is known to be a genuinely kind and generous person and had no intention of making things difficult for Remedy. Instead, he let them use the service for free. Almost at least.

This was revealed in an interview on Eurogamer, where Remedy boss Sam Lake reveals:

“When I created the original Alan Wake, I really wanted to start with a quote from him. I understand he wanted $1 so we could get the usage rights. [C’était] so generous.

A very nice touch. It remains to be seen if Alan Wake 2 will feature King-related content. Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 18th for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
