The US Coast Guard announced on Sunday June 25 that it had launched an investigation into the causes of the implosion of the submersible Titan, whose five passengers died during a dive to the wreck of the Titanic. “My primary goal is to prevent a similar incident by making the necessary recommendations to improve the safety of the maritime industry worldwide,” the Coast Guard chief investigator said at a news conference in Boston.
An initial collection of evidence is underway, including “debris at the scene of the incident,” he said. The US investigative authority will also be able to give an opinion on a possible court case “if necessary”.
The approximately 6.50 meter long Titan crashed on June 18 and was due to resurface seven hours later. But contact was lost less than two hours after his departure. Its five passengers died in the boat’s “catastrophic implosion,” the Coast Guard said on Thursday. Several pieces of debris were found in the Atlantic Ocean, 500 meters from the Titanic and at a depth of almost 4,000 meters. A further investigation was launched by Canada, which participated in the search for the submersible.
