The Chinese Prime Minister on Tuesday, June 27, deplored Western calls to reduce dependency on his country. Li Qiang, in charge of economic affairs, stressed the need for “cooperation,” which he said is the only way to create growth and prosperity.
His speech, which he delivered at the opening of the World Economic Forum in Tianjin, comes at a time when the Europeans and the United States are trying to diversify their economic partners. “In the West, some people take the principle that we should reduce dependency and eliminate risks,” the Chinese premier said. These two concepts are a false proposition because with the development of globalization, the global economy has become a community where everyone is intertwined.
“There are still many global challenges and difficulties ahead, such as climate change, debt risk, slowing growth and the rich-poor gap,” Li Qiang said. “In order to solve the series of great problems facing mankind (…), mutual cooperation is necessary,” he said.
