School holidays in Vienna start at the weekend and many people go on vacation. A significant number of those seeking relaxation make the journey in their own car. Reason enough for a price check: Fuel prices in many holiday destinations are currently higher than in Austria, but still significantly lower than last year.
Refueling is significantly cheaper this year than last year. Last year, you had to pay more than €100 for a 50-litre tank of diesel in 16 EU countries, but this year not in any, as a current analysis by mobility organization VCÖ shows. Compared to many holiday countries, refueling in Austria is cheaper: diesel costs more in nine EU countries than in Austria, for Eurosuper you pay more in 15 EU countries than in Germany.
Most expensive diesel in Italy
Diesel prices are currently highest in Sweden, Finland and Italy. According to the VCÖ, 50 liters of diesel cost around 84 euros in Italy, around 8.50 euros more than the Austrian average. In Germany, a tank of 50 liters of diesel costs around five euros more, in Greece around three euros. In the second most popular holiday destination, Croatia, 50 liters of diesel is around €3.50 cheaper than in Austria. The price of diesel is also lower in Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain and the Czech Republic, among others.
Eurosuper in 15 countries more expensive than with us
The Eurosuper price is higher in 15 EU countries than in Austria. After Denmark and Finland, Greece is also a popular summer destination for Austrians among the three countries with the highest prices. In Greece, 50 liters of Eurosuper costs almost €94, around €15 more than the Austrian average. Also in France you have to pay around 15 euros more, in Germany around 14 and in Italy around 13 euros. Eurosuper is cheaper in Croatia and also in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The right driving style saves money
“If you don’t take the train, bus or bicycle for your holiday trip, you can save a lot of money with an economical driving style, even where fuel prices are lower than in Austria,” says VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger. Speed has a big impact on fuel consumption. Driving on the Autobahn at 110 km/h instead of 130 km/h reduces consumption by an average of 17% and at 100 instead of 130 km/h by up to 23%. A car also consumes less fuel at low revs, so quickly shift into the next higher gear. If you try to travel with less luggage, you can save on a roof box, which also increases consumption due to air resistance. Air conditioning can be a real gas guzzler. Setting them too cold increases fuel consumption.
