The Association for the Protection of the Environment of Lake Nairne (APELN) has dealt a serious blow this year. At least 20 divers will participate in the Big Lake Cleanup event.
This major action that will take place on July 8th is not the only one that will be carried out. APELN will focus on and reiterate two messages: washing boats to prevent the introduction of invasive alien species and respecting the navigation chart to preserve the health of the lake, local biodiversity, and the well-being and safety of users .
Taking place on July 8th at the Saint-Aimé-des-Lacs outdoor base, the Lake Nairne clean-up operation aims to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving water resources and fighting watercourse pollution.
The organization “Let’s do our part” and its divers will assist APELN in cleaning the lake water.
The municipality of Saint-Aimé-des-Lacs and the MRC de Charlevoix-Est are partners in this environmental initiative.
Two dives are offered during the day. Volunteers will assist the diving team to ensure their safety through their presence with kayaks, providing pontoons for waste recovery, as well as handling the waste collected at the municipal campsite level.
Residents are encouraged to collect rubbish and various debris found near the shore to remove most of the pollutants from the water.
APELN has engaged the services of the Charlevoix-Montmorency watershed organization to educate residents on the importance of developing riparian strips and the regulations in place. Environmental experts will be present to advise the community on best greening practices for their waterfront.
For the 2023 summer season, the club can count on the help of an intern. Megane Lelier, an environmental Masters student at the University of Sherbrooke, will support the association in achieving its goals.
