“Today, at the latest tomorrow, we will reach a frightening figure of two million Ukrainian refugees who have crossed the borders of neighboring countries,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on France Inter on Tuesday, March 8.

“We are still present in Ukraine and we know that hundreds of thousands of people are on the move, scared, trying to flee the war zones and first take refuge inside Ukraine, in safer areas, especially in the west,” adds Filippo Grandi. It is shrinking and so the security space is getting smaller and they will inevitably try to cross the borders.”
Ukrainian refugees are “almost entirely” women and children, says the High Commissioner for Refugees. “In my 40 years of career, I have hardly ever seen such a predominance of women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities,” Filippo Grandi regrets. “This population is very characteristic of all this.”
“I think it’s important to remember this today, on this international women’s rights day: men are fighting the war and women are paying the consequences.”

According to Filippo Grandi, there are “several thousand” such refugees in France. “We will have more,” he predicts. “Most are in Poland and then in other neighboring countries (…) They are already moving to other countries (…) What worries me a lot is that there will soon be a second wave of people who will have far fewer resources and who will be more vulnerable.” “Striking civilians is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” he added.
