The parquet floors of Basse-Terre and Pointe-à-Pitre announced on Wednesday, June 28th, the opening of two judicial investigations into five accidents caused by defective airbags, which resulted in injuries and deaths in Guadeloupe. The oldest “dates from 2018,” according to the Pointe-à-Pitre prosecutor.

Judicial information is opened for “involuntary homicide and personal injury” and “involuntary injury involving ITT, less than and more than three months old, as the case may be, committed by carelessness, negligence, or breach of a safety obligation by an individual or entity.” .

They come after “airbag explosions, which are the cause of road accidents (…) and which have multiplied in recent years,” prosecutors announced at a joint press conference. “It’s the same Japanese brand that’s coming back,” added the Pointe-à-Pitre prosecutor.

Basse-Terre prosecutors were seized in May over the death of a 44-year-old mother. The driver was killed by “a projectile from a (…) airbag that hit part of the head,” according to prosecutors. Six other accidents will be the subject of additional investigations by the Pointe-à-Pitre Attorney’s Office and may be related to the “how and when” process.
