Brasilia, 29th June (RHC) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will attend the opening ceremony of the XXVI. meeting of the Sao Paulo Forum, which will last until next Sunday.

After three years without appointments due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Annual Meetings will again take place in person and this time in Brasilia, where 150 representatives from 23 countries will take part.

The group of political organizations and movements will discuss, among other things, the integration between the countries of the continent, the situation of Brazilian politics, social networks and fake news, and anti-imperialism.

The issue pays homage to Marco Aurelio García, one of the founders of the Forum and of the Workers’ Party (PT), who held the position of special adviser to the President of the Republic for international affairs in the Lula governments (2003-2003). 2010) and Dilma Rousseff (2011–2016), and died of a heart attack in 2017 at the age of 76.

Born in the 1990s from a call by Lula and the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the forum consisted primarily of reflecting on the fall of the Berlin Wall and the alternative and autonomous paths that the left should take . in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In its functional structure, there is the Working Group, made up of representatives from 16 countries, with regular meetings and three regional secretariats: Southern Cone, based in Uruguay; Andino Amazónica with provisional headquarters in Colombia and Central America and the Caribbean with headquarters in El Salvador.

The articulation structure also includes an Executive Secretariat, which is responsible for guiding the decisions taken in the annual plenary sessions, in the regional meetings and in the working group.

Currently, the Executive Secretariat is based in Sao Paulo and the PT fills that role.

In addition to the member parties, the annual meetings also bring together guests from social movements and political organizations from other continents.

Its activities include general plenary sessions, sectoral meetings of women, youth, Afro-descendants, indigenous peoples, networks of foundations and schools, among others.

Also thematic workshops on media, anti-colonial struggle, seminar on progressive governments and training school.

From 2015, the parties and organizations affiliated with the Forum faced a new challenge in the face of the strong winds of the neoliberal counter-offensive practically across the continent.

In January 2017, the working group submitted another document to member parties, entitled Consensus of Our America, which analyzed the overall development of the organization and launched new debates and proposals.
