Microsoft has just confirmed the presence of a nasty bug in the latest update of its operating system. Introduced in mid-June, Patch Tuesday may prevent Office applications from opening on Windows in some cases.
Can’t open some of your Office applications on your PC? You are probably the victim of the nasty error affecting the latest Windows 10 or Windows 11 update. Microsoft has in fact confirmed the problem on its online platform dedicated to monitoring problems related to updates for its BONE.
“After installing KB5027231 or later updates on Windows devices that have certain antivirus, antimalware, or security software installed, you may not be able to open Microsoft or third-party apps. Some known applications affected are Microsoft Outlook and other Microsoft Office applications. “states the Redmond giant in its report.
A purposeful problem
According to Microsoft, this problem would only affect certain users in a very specific configuration. Windows 11 in versions 21H2 and 22H2, Windows 10 in versions 21H2 and 22H2 and Windows Server 2022 are affected. However, the problem would primarily affect professional users. In fact, this problem that prevents Office applications from opening would appear due to the use of 32-bit version applications that are installed and running on a 64-bit operating system. Furthermore, this strange error only appeared on PCs with the antivirus solution Trellix Endpoint Security in a version older than 35.31.25. “Consumers using Windows devices at home are unlikely to experience this issue. concludes Microsoft on its support page
A simple solution
If you are one of the professional users affected by this error, Microsoft explains how to fix the error on its support pages. Simply updating the Trellix Endpoint Security Agent antivirus software to the latest version (35.31.25 at the time of writing) would suffice. However, Microsoft encourages users affected by the issue but using a different antivirus solution on their machine to contact their antivirus publisher’s customer support.
