Madonna was to tour the world over a period of seven months

Madonna has been discharged from hospital and is at home after intensive care and feeling better, the BBC has learned.

The news of her poor health was shared by her manager, who said she had suffered a “severe bacterial infection”.

The 64-year-old was due to embark on a seven-month world tour in the coming weeks but has had to postpone it.

She was taken to her home in New York in a private ambulance, a source told CNN, adding, “She is safe.”

Madonna, who is very reserved on health issues, was in the final stages of rehearsals ahead of her extensive world tour.

Madonna was supposed to celebrate her 40th anniversary in the music industry with her tour

The Celebration tour was scheduled to start in Canada in two weeks and then visit 45 cities around the world.

It would be her twelfth tour and would mark her 40 years of involvement in the music industry.

American magazine Forbes lists her as the 45th richest self-made woman in the US with an estimated net worth of US$580 million (£460 million) and states that she has earned an estimated US$1.2 billion from touring .

Details on whether the tour will still go ahead have yet to be announced. Oseary said: “At this point we have to pause all commitments, including the tour.”

“We’ll let you know more details as soon as we have them, including a new tour start date and for any shows that have been postponed.”

Oseary also said in his statement that he expects the singer to make a “full recovery.”

What could have caused Madonna’s infection?

It’s not clear what originally caused Madonna’s bacterial infection, but doctors say it became extremely serious and required intensive care treatment.

Infections can develop into a life-threatening condition called sepsis, or blood poisoning.

It is a medical emergency and occurs when the body develops an extreme response to the infection.

Without proper treatment, it can result in tissue damage, organ failure, and even death.

Most commonly, the initial infection that triggers these events begins in the lungs, skin, urinary system, or gastrointestinal tract.

Sepsis can occur in anyone with an infection, but is more likely when someone is already exhausted, vulnerable, or unwell.

Well wishes came for The Weeknd singer, real name Abel Tesfaye, who said he would “send prayers,” and from “Desperately Seeking Susan” co-star Rosanna Arquette, who wrote that she had “love and good vibes of light ‘ send for recovery.

Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie also sent well wishes, along with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay, singer-songwriter Ryan Tedder, musician Jon Batiste, blogger Perez Hilton, and model and actress Amber Valetta.

Ru Paul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage added, “Take good care of our Queen,” while Wedding Crashers star Isla Fisher added, “Sending her so much love.”

Rita Wilson, the producer, actress and singer also wrote, “Sending my prayers to Madonna for a speedy recovery.”

Actors Evan Rachel Wood, Rosie Perez, Isla Fisher and Zooey Deschanel also expressed their support and sent their regards to the singer.

Announcing the tour back in January, Madonna told fans, “I’m looking forward to trying out as many songs as possible in hopes of giving my fans the show they’ve been waiting for.”

Madonna’s biggest hits span several decades – including “Into The Groove” (1985), “Like A Prayer” (1989), “to Vogue” (1990) and “Hung Up” (2005), to name a few.

It’s likely that Madonna – who is very private about health matters – was in the final stages of a rehearsal in preparation for the tour.

In 2009, after completing her Sticky & Sweet Tour, she was awarded a Guinness World Record for highest-grossing music tour by a female artist.

American magazine is the 45th richest self-made woman in the US with an estimated net worth of US$580 million (£460 million) and claims to have made an estimated US$1.2 billion from touring.

She has six children. Last week, she posted to her 18.9million Instagram followers to congratulate her 10-year-old twin daughters on graduating from elementary school.

Madonna Louise Ciccone grew up in the city of Detroit, Michigan. In 1978 she moved to New York to pursue a career in dance and music.

Earlier this year, her older brother Anthony Ciccone died at the age of 66 after struggling with alcoholism and homelessness.
