Civil society will monitor the national dialogue process in Ethiopia

The Council of Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations (ECSOC) and the Coalition of Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations for Elections signed the document outlining the work to ensure proper public access to information and outcomes of the process.

Ecsoc Executive Director Henok Melesse expressed the council’s determination to work with the coalition through the demonstration of the transparent sector of civil society.

For its part, the coalition emphasized that the monitoring aims to contribute to the transparency and credibility of the national dialogue process.

Both parties agreed that the general supervision of this activity should be based on the principles of objectivity, accountability and impartiality.

As part of the Pretoria Peace Agreement signed in South Africa on November 2 between the Ethiopian government and the People’s Liberation Front of Tigray to end the armed conflict, the National Dialogue Commission, mediated by the African Union, is working to identify the differences between sectors of society .

Proclamation No. 1265/2021 confers powers on the Commission, which include defining workflows for the national dialogue process, selecting participants, setting the agenda and overseeing popular consultations currently taking place in the country.

According to official sources, reconciliation, victim compensation, justice and other issues will be on the agenda of this process, which will bring lasting solutions to long-standing problems.
