Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane has agreed to a five-year contract extension for a maximum of $207 million, his agents Jim Tanner, Max Wiepking and Terrence Felder of Tandem Sports + Entertainment told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The cornerstones of Memphis – Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Bane – are now secured for the long term. Bane’s $200 million deal is the first in Grizzlies history.
Bane, 25, has become one of the NBA’s top young shooting guards since being selected 30th overall in the 2020 draft. Last season, he averaged career-high points (21.5), rebounds (5.0), assists (4.4), and field goal percentage (48%) with 51 wins for the Grizzlies.
Bane also returned to at least 40% of his 3-pointers, which he has done in all three of his NBA seasons.
Bane made an immediate contribution as a rookie and has made significant strides each year of his career, improving his points, rebounds and assists averages each season.
Bane was a consistently elite 3-pointer, making 42.5% of his attempts past the archway during his three-year career and increasing the number each season. It’s the second-best 3-point percentage over the past three seasons among players with at least 400 3-pointers scored. His 228 3s made last season broke the Memphis franchise record.
Bane is also a dynamic marksman who can pull off an elite shot from both the catch and dribbling. In the last three seasons, 73 players have attempted 250 3-pointers from dribbling and 250 3-pointers from catching; According to Second Spectrum, Bane is one of only five players to shoot at least 40% of every type.
Bane underwent surgery in May to repair a broken sesamoid bone in his right big toe, an injury that caused him to miss 17 games after originally suffering the injury in November. He is expected to be fully recovered before the start of the season.
