URNG supports Front in Defense of Vote in Guatemala

The political force, founded as a guerrilla group in 1982, warned that the task is to defend the referendum and not allow the dark forces of the corrupt and authoritarian right to gain the upper hand.

The URNG expressed its position “consistent with its historical obligations, interests and rights, which it has demonstrated for more than five decades, at this critical moment when historical enemies” are sinking the country.

The Guatemalan ruling classes have been repeating anti-popular acts since 1821 with a false independence, he recalled in a statement.

Also in 1963, with the coup, they prevented the general elections in which the former president of the republic, Juan José Arévalo, was the potential winner, he said.

He pointed out that currently, under the protection of state cooptation, parts of the ruling classes in alliance with the private sector, organized crime, drug trafficking and various transnational corporations are being fully exploited for illegal maneuvers.

He described it as “illegal to continue to deny and ignore the sovereign will of the Guatemalan people, which was expressed with convincing clarity in the first round of elections on June 25.”

The Corrupt Pact does not accept the people’s decision and is again using its power to destabilize the democratic system, the URNG stressed.

To back this up, the Constitutional Court created an illegal procedure in an attempt to violate the election result, he noted.

He called for full respect for the legitimate, lawful and sovereign results of the first round of elections and, most importantly, for the immediate cessation of the sabotage and obstruction policies of the second round of elections.

He stressed that, with the unanimous political will of his members, he supported the candidacy in the presidential elections of the Seed party, led by Bernardo Arévalo.

This support comes holistically through active participation in promoting and defending the vote, he emphasized in the text.

The URNG urged its militancy, members and communities to be vigilant in the days to come, “as it will not come as a surprise that these groups want to promote maneuvers that will prevent the second round of voting,” he stressed.

In this case, he urged organizing the defense and applying pressure to demand the rule of law.

Guatemala is in a situation of uncertainty as more than ten political parties are promoting the idea of alleged electoral fraud and national and international organizations are validating their findings.
