Journalist Jaime Bayly surprised his followers by launching his YouTube account after revealing his pay cut on mega-TV show Miami. As he put it in his column “My Empire is in Shambles” published in Diario Las Américas.

“Why did I start a personal channel on YouTube when I already have a show on a TV station in Miami every Monday through Friday that airs across the United States? Because although my TV program on this channel was moderately successful and was able to be broadcast for almost twenty years, the wind is blowing and my whereabouts on this TV channel is doubtful and uncertain. Coincidentally, the station’s founder, who hired me almost twenty years ago, has just sold the station. She was forced to do this because the open television business is in crisis,” the author said.

The TV presenter explained that the magnate who hired him almost 20 years ago cut his salary. “When he saw his advertising revenue drop drastically, he cut my salary year after year, so I’m now making 60 percent less than 15 years ago,” he said.

“Will the new owners want to keep my show but take a hit on my salary with an axe, chainsaw or machete? That would be painful. In that case, I would probably retire to watch TV at home,” he added.

Jaime Bayley He pointed out that the decision to open his YouTube channel had nothing to do with money. He also announced that his stage on television would end and that he would focus on new formats.

“Now if I get fired, I will own and run my own YouTube channel and no one can fire me from there, not even my wife. (…) Whether I get fired from TV or not, hopefully I’ll reach November with a personal channel on YouTube, so with one voice, one platform and one audience, with thousands of viewers watching me every day adventure creatively accompany the channel, so that I can celebrate forty years as a television maker, even if my program no longer exists,” he emphasized.
