247 Renowned playwright José Celso Martinez, 86, was hospitalized Monday at the emergency room of the Hospital das Clínicas in the Cerqueira César neighborhood of São Paulo for burns that affected about 60% of his body. Martinez was taken to the intensive care unit, where he was intubated.
According to the newspaper O Globo, the playwright is said to have suffered burns in a fire caused by the heating in his apartment, which eventually fell to the ground causing the accident. Three other people were also injured, but less seriously, and are being treated at a nearby health center. Zé Celso’s apartment is in a neighborhood near the Hospital das Clínicas. At the time of the accident, which happened in the morning, eight vehicles were called to the scene of the accident.
Born in 1937, José Celso is considered one of the country’s leading playwrights and has developed into one of the most prominent figures in the theater scene since the 1960s, where he directed the renowned Teatro Oficina in São Paulo.
