Last Monday (3), 86yearold playwright José Celso Martinez was admitted to the emergency room at the Hospital das Clínicas in São Paulo with burns covering more than 60% of his body. Due to the serious medical condition, he was referred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and intubated.

According to O Globo, the playwright burned himself at home after a fire caused by the heater. The device would have fallen to the ground and would have spread the fire in the apartment. In addition to Zé Celso, three other people would have been injured, but less seriously. They are cared for in a health post.

The artist lives near the Hospital das Clínicas. After the accident, which happened in the morning, eight vehicles were sent to the scene of the accident.

Zé Celso has been recognized as one of Brazil’s most important playwrights since the 1960s, when he began directing the Teatro Oficina in São Paulo.
