The north of the country suffered heavy stormy rain with strong gusts in the evening and night hours from Tuesday to Wednesday. If there was any localized flooding, it was mainly the fierce winds that observed speeds of 125 km/h in Saulty in the Pas-de-Calais.

A weather pattern favoring the rapid deepening of the poly low

The country’s north-west found itself at the center of a clash on Tuesday between very mild air rising in a south-westerly current from the Bay of Biscay and much cooler air flowing down from the British Isles. This situation combined with a fast jet stream Altitude, at the end of the day favored the rapid deepening of a low-pressure system circulating from Normandy towards the North Sea.

The very unstable air mass produced heavy, stormy rain lines that circulated on an axis stretching from Brittany and Normandy to the Paris Basin and Hauts-de-France. During the first part of the night, gusts were strongest in Hauts-de-France and Haute-Normandie as the poly low deepened rapidly.

Stormy gusts and some damage from Haute-Normandie to Hauts-de-France

Météorage recorded just over 1,000 lightning strikes on Tuesday, July 4th. If these figures for early July are not exceptional, given that this month is the busiest month of the year when it comes to lightning, it is above all the heavy rains and, above all, the violent gusts that were notable. Monthly wind records were also broken in Saulty in the Pas-de-Calais (125 km/h), in Margny-les-Compiègne in the Oise (107 km/h) or in Amiens in the Somme (102 km/h).

Damage from falling trees was observed in Hauts-de-France, particularly in the Arras region, as well as in Seine-Maritime, causing disruption and delays to SNCF traffic. Some flooding was observed both in the Eure and on the Paris ring road. At Paris-Lariboisière train station in the 10th arrondissement, 36 mm fell, equivalent to more than 15 days of rain.

Poly depression continues to intensify on Wednesday, moving towards Denmark. Stormy winds with gusts of up to 130 km/h in the morning over the Netherlands before reaching Denmark in the afternoon and evening.
