BOSTON — At the Logan Airport ridesharing pickup line, finding an Uber or Lyft ride wasn’t the biggest problem for those returning from July 4 trips.
“It lasted about two minutes. I think my husband is here,” Victoria Izsa said as her Uber driver pulled up.
The stop-and-go traffic into the city was the most annoying. Those are the delays you warned transportation authorities about now that the Sumner Tunnel is closed for repairs.
“I try not to take the airport rides,” said Uber driver Kassandra Hernandez.
It is a massive headache that started early Wednesday morning and lasted until the end of August.
Hernandez told WBZ-TV that she will avoid East Boston at all costs.
“It’s so frustrating because if you’re just picking up one or two people, you lose three or four hours of the day,” Hernandez explained.
That means cars must travel three to four hours toward the Ted Williams Tunnel, an alternate route for those traveling to and from East Boston.
“It’s more complicated on the weekend,” Hernandez added.
And we’re not even in the middle of it yet. The day after the long Bank Holiday weekend, the journey through the Ted Williams Tunnel that would have taken five minutes took 20 minutes. And it wasn’t even rush hour. Next week will be the real test when people on holiday for the holidays return to work.
“I have my car here, so I plan for there to be a lot of traffic to and from work here,” Izsa said.
Here’s some light at the end of the tunnel: the Blue Line will be free for passengers until the end of August.
