Lima, July 5 (RHC) The National Electoral Committee of Peru reported Wednesday that it is able to hold early parliamentary elections within 230 days from when the executive branch launches the call.

JNE leader Jorge Salas referred to the issue in a conference with the international press before asking a question about President Dina Boluarte’s recent statement that the possibility of an electoral advancement was ruled out.

The judge pointed out that the court guarantees that in 230 days all the phases required by the electoral norms will be met, but the primaries will be omitted.

He made it clear that this term runs from call to election, which requires Congress to pre-approve the regulations that make the push legally possible.

He recalled that in December this year the National Electoral Body (JNE) made public its willingness to hold early elections and did so after the first nearly 50 civilian deaths in protests against Boluarte in the southern Andean region of Ayacucho, when “We said: ‘No more deaths,'” he recalls.

However, the possibility was diluted by marches and counter-marches before the president, who succeeded the sacked Pedro Castillo, reneged on the promise he made when he took office in December 2021 to install an interim government.

From then on, the ruler has maintained her stance of abiding by Parliament’s decisions, despite calls for her to step down in order to move forward with the elections, as polls show a large majority believe she should resign.

The central theme of the conference with the foreign press was the JNE’s denunciation of the actions of a majority of parliament, which, despite its autonomy, wants to change the members of the electoral tribunal. (Spring: Latin Press).
