1,500 Disney collectibles to be auctioned

An auction house will sell about a quarter of “Toy Scout” Joel Magee’s massive collection of Disney merchandise later this month.

Van Eaton Galleries said Tuesday that over 1,500 Disneyland memorabilia coming up for auction will be released for auction on July 17. The pieces come from Magee’s collection of 6,000 items, which the auction house says has been collecting since he was young.

“This is the first and most important auction of his collection in the coming year and includes by far the most impressive and historically significant individual pieces,” said Mike Van Eaton, co-founder of the Van Eaton Galleries, in the statement.

As part of the auction, which ends on July 19, vehicles from various attractions will be up for sale.

Van Eaton Galleries said a Magee Midget Autopia car could be priced anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000.

A Space Mountain vehicle and another elephant-shaped vehicle from the “Dumbo” ride will also be auctioned, according to Van Eaton Galleries. The former is expected to fetch $10,000 to $20,000. The auction house estimated the sale price to be between $100,000 and $200,000.

According to Van Eaton Galleries, someone could pay anywhere from $30,000 to $60,000 to buy a “Doom Buggy” at the Haunted Mansion attraction.

The collection includes some other potentially high-priced items such as restored tiki birds from the Enchanted Tiki Room, which are expected to fetch between $80,000 and $100,000, and a trio of Audio Animatronic Hitchhiking Ghosts, which the auction house estimates are likely to fetch $100,000 to $200,000. will bring in dollars. An original Global Van Lines moving truck was now valued at between $100,000 and $200,000.

Van Eaton Galleries noted that the catalog “contains for the first time the world’s largest collection of Disneyland posters overall.”

“I’ve spent most of my life scouring the world for the most extraordinary Disney merchandise that chronicles the history of such a magical place,” Magee said in a statement. “It’s always been a passion of mine and now it’s time to share that passion with fans and collectors around the world.”

“I look forward to seeing all the happy faces at the exhibition and hope that the lucky bidders who will become the new stewards of the pieces in this collection will enjoy and learn from them, as I have over the past few decades have.”

The auction follows an approximately two-and-a-half week public display of the items, which began June 28 in Burbank, California.

The Walt Disney Co. has operated Disneyland in Anaheim, California for nearly 68 years and the theme park first opened to the public in July 1955.
