It took a few months for the first results of artificial intelligence to become visible in photos and simple illustrations before it was used by some of the world’s greatest artists. This Thursday (6th) we took another step in that direction as the son of Elis Regina Approved the use of a mother’s “deepfake” in a TV commercial.
The producer João Marcello Boscoli commented on the publicity that united his sister, the singer Maria Ritawith an AI version of the mother singing along to the classic “Like our parents”41 years after Elis’ death.
In an interview with the newspaper O Globo, Bôscoli said that he himself had used artificial intelligence tools to rebuild the collection of one of the greatest voices Brazil has ever had.
He said that while he respects the opinion of those who disliked the commercial, he thought the use of new technology to highlight Elis Regina’s work was “extremely positive”:
Artificial intelligence is like television. At first it can cause us not to know exactly what it is, but little by little it invades our daily lives, whether we like it or not.
I have used artificial intelligence and analog tape recording extensively in the restoration of my mother’s collection, and this resource is extremely useful for that. Not to replace human labor, but to do things we couldn’t do.

João Marcello Bôscoli also said that he does not rule out the possibility of using deepfake a learning technology that allows the manipulation of videos and audios to stage a 3D Elis Regina.
It is worth remembering that in the post announcing her participation in the Volkswagen commercial, Maria Rita also advocated the use of AI in her mother’s image, saying that “a dream has come true”.
