Holland, Rutte government falls over immigration

AGI – The Government Ruth IV fell. The asylum negotiations, which dragged on for months, have shattered the partnership between them VVD, D66, CDA and CU. The crisis paves the way for new elections, probably in the fall. When it comes to asylum measures and immigration law, the governing parties have long been diametrically opposed.

In the week the sensitive file exploded, in which the differences between VVD and CDA on the one hand and D66 and CU were large. Especially between VVD and CU there were many conflicts about the measures limit family reunification. The differences proved irreconcilable.

The government parties have long been completely at odds with the asylum measures. Today, writes De Telegraaph, it has already become clear that the CU offices are particularly unstable. Before the coalition meeting, MPs from the smallest coalition party had already gathered, whereupon faction leader Bikker continued to speak to the ministers of the CU.

They were introduced in the last few days numerous proposals to bring the parties together. The last plan discussed on Friday was a so-called on and off button for family reunification. If the influx of migrants was too great, this button could be disabled. But even this did not lead to an agreement between the parties.

Previous plans also failed. Yesterday, for example, VVD and CDA themselves proposed an elaboration an initiative law introducing a two-state system. In such an asylum system, migrants would be granted different rights. D66 and CU already saw less in such a system and did not find the idea of an initiative law attractive at all. A plan to introduce the multi-state system under the condition of a test implementation also failed due to resistance from D66 and CU.

Tempers had been heating up in recent days after Prime Minister Rutte tabled a solid package of demands in a show of force on Wednesday. Yesterday the Prime Minister got things back on track and decided to give the parties another day to consider a final proposal. But that too is dead, and with it the toilet.
