According to Mizan Online, the website of the judiciary, on Saturday, July 8, Iran publicly hanged two men involved in the 2022 attack on a Shia shrine in Shiraz, in the south of the country.
The attack on October 26 killed 13 and wounded 30. Enough to rank it among the deadliest in Iran in recent years. The jihadist group Islamic State (IS) had raised a claim. The two men, whose nationality was not specified, were hanged on a street in Shiraz.
Convicted of “corruption on earth”.
According to the official Irna news agency, the executions took place near the shrine, a very important Shia pilgrimage site in Iran. Mizan Online identified the two men executed as Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeem Hashem Qatali. According to that agency, the first had confessed to collaborating with the group that carried out the attack.
In March a court sentenced her to death after convicting her of “corruption on earth, armed rebellion and undermining national security”. They were also accused of belonging to the Islamic State group and of “conspiring against the security of the country”. In November, the authorities said that 26 “Takfiri terrorists” from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan had been arrested in connection with the attack. In Iran, a Shia-majority country, the term “takfiri” generally refers to jihadists or adherents of radical Sunni Islam.
Public executions are relatively rare in Iran, with most executions taking place in prisons. According to several human rights NGOs, including Amnesty International, Iran executed 582 people in 2022, more than any other country except China.
