Xavier Dolan confirms he won’t be making any more films – Le Devoir

Amid a two-day media storm, director Xavier Dolan posted an update on his Instagram account on Friday night: he will no longer be making films but is keeping the door open to producing TV series.

In a publication written in English, the Québec director revisits his statements, widely disseminated and quoted by the Spanish dailies El País and El Mundo, that he particularly wants to retire.

“I said I wanted to stop making films and I’m happy with that decision,” the filmmaker writes. “I don’t want to do any more films because they don’t make me happy. »

Nonetheless, he states that he is “currently involved in television projects” and intends to continue his engagements. A little further, he adds that he “could do series”.

Dolan also returns to his most controversial remarks, quoted by El Mundo: “Art is useless and dedicating yourself to cinema is a waste of time.” Several actors in the cultural industry have taken offense at this quote in recent days.

“The first part of that sentence is a broad generalization, and the second part is pure fabrication,” claims Dolan, who disapproves of the way the daily quotes him.

The 34-year-old filmmaker says he now wants to focus on his health, family, friends and “other passions” while reaffirming his love of art. “I believe that art offers a remedy for our overwhelming reality and saves lives. »
