The rookie remains a presence despite All-Star Game selection and injury fears

00:33 UTC

PHOENIX — People have been trying to bring Corbin Carroll out of the present moment and into the future for a while, but the D-Backs outfielder, smart past his 22 years, just won’t let it happen.

His presence allowed him to thrive in the minors last season while everyone was asking when he would be called up to the majors. That’s why he focused on his shoulder rehabilitation in 2021 when people wanted to know if he would be the same hitter with a surgically repaired shoulder.

And so he’s navigated the past 10 days, an emotional roller coaster of being selected to start for the National League team in the All-Star Game and then dealing with being missed twice games due to pain in the same shoulder had to leave.

“I’m exhausted by him,” said D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo of what Carroll has been through over the past week. “And I don’t know how he does it. He is a little boy and achieves a lot. It balances a lot. It’s about balancing your emotions, and that’s hard. It’s hard for everyone. So, you know, I just tried to reach out to him and show him that I’m proud of him for that and that we have his back.”

Carroll was forced to leave Thursday night’s game after suffering an awkward swing and experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder. As Carroll left the field that night, Lovullo said he was concerned the season was over for the rookie phenom.

However, an MRI performed the next morning showed the shoulder was structurally sound, and Carroll fought his way into the lineup Friday night. He was back on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s busy,” Carroll said. “I’m just trying to be in the present. These things have happened in the past and there will be some in the future as well, but [I’m] I’m just trying to be here. We have a great group of people who somehow helped make this possible. It’s fun to be with these guys every day.”

Carroll was the moment in the 10th inning. He figured the Pirates would deliberately overtake Ketel Marte to get close if a player dropped out and they ended up tied for second and third on points.

“No surprise,” Carroll said. “I was in the box before Ketel took off his clothes.”

At a score of 2-2, Pirates All-Star closer David Bednar threw a 98 mph fastball which Carroll falsified. Bednar came back with a curveball down and in, and Carroll managed to drop the bat’s head on it, marking it for the game winner.

“I worked on curveballs with the hitting coaches before the game,” Carroll said. “Kind of cool [get the hit] on that pitch guy.”

It was a good win for the D-Backs, who, with starter Merrill Kelly on the injured list, completed a seven-pitcher bullpen game to get through the 10 innings.

Meanwhile, the Pirates started their ace, Mitch Keller, and he excelled, holding the D-backs to just one hit in seven shutout innings. They eventually broke through and leveled the game in the eighth when reliever Colin Holderman conceded a home run to first batter he faced, Alek Thomas, on his second pitch.

“We kept fighting all day,” Lovullo said. “Their all-star starter couldn’t hit us for most of the game, but we just kept making it.”
