About 700 couples attend a big wedding in New York

NEW YORK – Some women wore elegant dresses and some men wore tuxedos, although some couples wore more casual attire, not an uncommon sight at New York’s Lincoln Center.

Anyway, last night’s vibe eluded routine between artificial flowers hanging from balconies while the brides – yes, the brides – carried bouquets of roses and wildflowers in a busy space full of excited couples.

In all, around 700 people came to the iconic New York City location to declare their love, whether it was for a short or a long time.

Some were exchanging vows for the first time, while others like Hazel Seivwright-Carney and her husband Rohan Carney came to renew their vows after running away together many years ago, much to the chagrin of their families.

“When we left 28 years ago, my mother didn’t get a chance to see us at our wedding,” the bride said.

Yesterday, her mother, who declined to comment, waited patiently in the muggy atmosphere for the wedding to begin to finally see her daughter tie the knot with the love of her life.

It was only the second year of what could become an annual event at Lincoln Center.

With so many weddings postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials at the center felt the event could help couples reunite after months of Covid boredom from lockdown.

“We started this last year just after the pandemic and thought it was time to come together,” said Shanta Thake, the center’s artistic director.

“There was so much cause for sadness and regret. It was also important that we had these rituals together.”
