CNESST has officially banned suitcase unlocking at Montreal-Trudeau Airport after the death of an employee in his 50s who performed the task Saturday.

The Equans Services employee was performing manipulation to unlock a suitcase before fatally falling.

“A member of our team has sadly passed away,” said Pierre Lapointe, the company’s senior vice president of operations. Paramedics confirmed his death at the scene.

Two CNESST investigators were then dispatched to the crime scene to set up a security perimeter and gather testimony.

They then suspended this task until the employer presented them with a new working method and informed the workers what to do if such a situation should arise again.

“Also, supportive actions have been taken for any employees who witnessed this incident,” adds Mr. Lapointe.

Equans Services and Aéroports de Montréal affirm their full cooperation with CNESST in the investigation.

Airport operations were not affected by this event.
