Turtle, snail and giraffe are the three contrade that were drawn tonight, Sunday 9 July, from 7 p.m. in the Sala degli Arazzi of the Town Hall in Piazza del Campo in Siena and which, together with the seven participants, by rights: Rook, dragon, caterpillar, panther, goose, eagle and porcupine; They will take part in the Palio di Siena on August 16, 2023, held in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
From the mullioned windows on the first floor of the Palazzo Pubblico, overlooking the Piazza del Campo, the three flags of the districts drawn were displayed in turn, alongside the seven participating in the career by rights, thus completing the lot of ten, that will be at the canape for the Palio di Siena on August 16, 2023.
Therefore, in the Palio dell’Assunta, three pairs of rivals will face each other on the tufa of Piazza del Campo: Aquila-Pantera, Snail-Tartuca and Oca-Torre.
Due to the disqualification regulations, the owl flag (which was drawn but still had to complete a disqualification palio) was placed in the last spot of the second floor window, thus satisfying the disqualification regulation. The Contrada della Civetta will therefore race again on the occasion of the Palio on July 2, 2024.
The flags of the other six Contrade not selected for the Palio di Siena on August 16, 2023 were then displayed on the triple windows on the second floor of the Palazzo Pubblico: Selva, Lupa, Valdimontone, Onda, Nicchio and Leocorno; the Contrade, which together with the Civetta will arbitrarily direct the Palio dell’Assunta 2024.
The captain of the Tartuca brought out his contrada, that of the dragon, the snail, the captain of the Lupa brought out the contrada della Civetta, and the captain of the Leocorno that of the giraffe.
