Colombia will preside over the Community of Latin American andBogotá, July 9 (Portal) – Colombia will head the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) in 2025, Deputy Secretary of State for Multilateral Affairs Elizabeth Taylor confirmed today.

By consensus, the 32 countries that make up the regional mechanism decided to “grant Colombia the privilege of hosting Celac in 2025. This is thanks to the leadership role that the government of change has in international affairs,” he said.

The appointment of Colombia to the pro tempore presidency of this mechanism was decided at the meeting of foreign ministers on July 7, reaffirming the South American country’s interest in strengthening and promoting Latin American and Caribbean integration.

This implies that the country will more resolutely pursue the integration processes of our region with the other regional blocs and world powers to represent the interests of the national government and the consensus of the region.

Within the efforts of the Colombian government with regard to integration, the promotion of the green transition and the regional energy connection are in the foreground at the regional level.

Among other things, the fight against climate change and the search for its financing, the new approach to the drug problem, migration, food and health self-sufficiency.

During the pro tempore presidency in 2025, it will have the opportunity to bring together the leaders of Celac and the European Union in Colombia by hosting the IV Celac-EU Summit.

This is a concerted scenario between the two regions, allowing for the structuring and implementation of a common agenda of interests and actions on cooperation and investment issues.

“This is the first time that Colombia has been elected to chair this mechanism for coordination and regional integration, which brings together the 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean,” Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva said on his Twitter profile. (Text and photo: PL)
