A boat capable of carrying around 200 migrants was spotted off the Canary Islands on Monday, July 10. It would correspond to what left Senegal almost two weeks ago, the Spanish rescuers specify. “We can’t confirm it 100% yet, but it’s likely that it’s the same thing,” a Salvamento Maritimo spokeswoman told AFP.

According to this spokesman, a ship left the Canary archipelago to rescue this boat, which is 71 nautical miles (130 km) south of the island of Gran Canaria, and it was to take several hours to bring it back to the archipelago’s coast. At the request of the Spanish authorities, a merchant ship also set course for the area where the boat was located.

Two other boats are missing

According to the NGO Caminando Fronteras, which gets its information from calls from migrants or their families, the wanted boat left the Senegalese town of Kafountine, some 1,700 kilometers from the coast of the Canary Islands, on June 27. “The families informed us of the disappearance of the boat, of which they had not heard for several days” and “we alerted the Spanish and Moroccan emergency services,” says the founder of this NGO, Helena Maleno, in an audio message.

Caminando Fronteras states that two other boats that left Senegal on June 23, with a total of around 120 people on board, are also missing.
