This morning agents from the National Police arrested a man of Spanish origin as the suspected perpetrator of an illegal crime while trying to get a baby from the room at Palma’s Son Llàtzer Hospital and their objective was not achieved.
Several witnesses noticed a person holding a newborn trying to leave the health facility and sounded the alarm. Maternity hospital security services held the suspect at the door of the same room where the newborn was held until a National Police citizen security patrol arrived and arrested him.
Agents have asked the man, whose identity or age has not been released, about the extent to which he was related to the baby and why he was carrying him while he was being treated at the hospital. Because the man failed to provide a convincing explanation, he was arrested for an alleged crime of attempted child abduction, according to Diario de Mallorca.
The facts are being investigated by the National Police Robbery Group, which wants to determine whether the man acted alone or was part of a conspiracy.
A similar event happened at Basurto Hospital in Biscay last October. A woman has been arrested as a suspect in kidnapping a baby. The woman, who was disguised as a health worker at the time of the kidnapping, took the baby from her mother’s arms, who tricked her into saying she was going to run some medical tests. Eventually, officers found the newborn in good condition and arrested the woman, who had tried unsuccessfully to kidnap other babies on other occasions.
