Mexico City.- The film ‘Sound of Freedom’, directed by Mexican Alejandro Monteverde and produced by Eduardo Verástegui, was named one of the highest-grossing films in the US this weekend.

The faith-based feature film, which tells a true story and is completely independent, has grossed around $40 million in US theaters since its theatrical release six days ago. Of those, 18.2 million were booked that weekend, becoming the third most viewed film in the US between Friday and Sunday.

The first and second places this weekend were The Night of the Demon: The Red Door ($32.7 million) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate ($26.5 million).

Sound of Freedom is currently showing in nearly 3,000 theaters across the US and Canada, which is almost unusual for a film from an independent studio.

“As with our July 4th numbers, today’s numbers are exceeding our expectations and we will continue this momentum,” said Brandon Purdie, director of film distribution at Angel Studios, the company behind the film, in a repeat statement from Variety.

“We’re getting news from across the country telling us about packed cinemas, sold out theaters and spontaneous standing ovations for the film at numerous venues. Thanks to the incredible word of mouth it has become a must see movie.”

The Sound of Freedom, starring Jim Caviezel, chronicles the struggle of a US federal agent who quits his job and dedicates his life to saving child victims of human trafficking and sex trafficking.
