Microsoft confirmed on Monday that it is cutting additional jobs a week after the start of fiscal 2024.
The cuts come in addition to job cuts announced in January, which led to 10,000 layoffs. The software maker also announced a small number of cuts around this time last year. GeekWire reported on the recent cuts on Monday.
Amazon, Google and other big tech companies have also reduced their headcount this year after rapidly increasing their headcount to meet rising demand during the Covid-19 pandemic. Microsoft has said in recent months that customers are looking for ways to save money on their cloud computing bills.
A Microsoft spokesman declined to give the number of cuts in the last round. In January, CEO Satya Nadella issued a memo announcing that the company would change its hardware offering and consolidate leases.
Microsoft filed a notice Monday that it would lay off 276 people in its home state of Washington. Of these, 66 are virtual.
Sales reps and customer success reps posted messages on social media to announce they had lost their jobs.
“Organizational and personnel adjustments are a necessary and regular part of running our business,” the spokesman said in an email. “We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and to support our customers and partners.”
