Six people died in a helicopter crash in Nepal near Mount Everest on Tuesday 11th. The victims are five Mexican tourists and a Nepalese pilot. According to local authorities, the plane crash happened shortly after takeoff.
The Manang Air helicopter took off from Surke near Lukla in the Everest region at 10:04 local time (01:19 GMT) and was due to fly to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu but lost contact after 10 minutes of travel.
According to the AFP news agency, six bodies were found at the crash site, as reported by Gyanendra Bhul from the civil aviation authority.
Manang Air official Raju Neupane confirmed to the agency that there were five tourists and one pilot.
Nepal is known for frequent flight safety issues. Less than six months ago, a plane crash was recorded in the west of the territory, killing 72 people on board the plane.
The remote, inaccessible routes and snow pose a challenge for drivers, including veterans. Nepal’s unstable climate also poses risks, as does the lack of runway maintenance and lack of training for local pilots.
The European Union (EU) has banned Nepalese airlines from entering its airspace.
