Amblin Partners and Universal Pictures Form New Multi Year Partnership

Amblin Partners and Universal Pictures have agreed on a new film partnership that builds on the companies’ longstanding creative collaboration. The new multi-year deal, announced Tuesday, will continue to give Universal first-look status on all Amblin theatrical projects while evolving Amblin’s film production model to give the company greater creative and financial flexibility.

“Universal is my ancestors’ studio, and this next chapter in our long-standing partnership will give Amblin the creative flexibility and autonomy I know will allow us to thrive together in the future,” said Steven Spielberg, chairman of amblin. “I am eternally grateful to our entire team at Amblin for their work and dedication over the years, and also to Donna and everyone at Universal for their dedication and partnership as we all look forward to our next adventure together.”

Sources tell Deadline that the deal signals Amblin’s shift from funding its own films to a traditional production deal with the studio. Insiders add that this isn’t an acquisition, but rather a no-hassle overall deal, and that Spielberg will continue to enjoy the autonomy to make the films he wants to make — as he’s always done.

Sources also add that Amblin is likely to see job cuts in the future, but it’s too early to say how many or in which departments.

“We’re excited to continue to develop our partnership with Steven and together strengthen our creative legacy that has resulted in so many iconic Universal films over the past half century,” said Donna Langley, chairman and chief content officer, NBCUniversal Studio Group. “Steven and the team at Amblin have been excellent partners and we look forward to this next chapter.”

Amblin will also continue its film partnership with Netflix, as well as its TV production business, which currently includes more than a dozen shows on both linear and streaming platforms.
